Gimli and Legolas
A dwarf and an elf in one company. Gimli, son of Glóin, and Legolas, son of Thranduil and prince of Mirkwood, are both recorded as members of the Fellowship of the Ring and both appear across all three parts of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship, The Two Towers, The Return of the King. Both belong to Tolkien's legendarium and were made by the same author.
How they met
In the Fellowship of the Ring — the one company both records carry. Before it, all they share is descent from two different peoples of Middle-earth: Gimli from the dwarves, made famous in the battles of the War of the Ring; Legolas from elvish Mirkwood, a master archer with keen sight and elvish grace.
The core tension
The pair is built on the contrast of two peoples marching in one line: axe against bow, dwarvish solidity against elvish lightness. Each record names a father — Glóin and Thranduil — so each brings not only himself into the company but his people with him. Legolas also appears in The Hobbit, in The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies, where Gimli does not.
